Where Photographed

This female northern cardinal was looking for the sunflower seeds and peanut parts at the feeding station on my deck in a suburban Minnesota neighborhood. The snow was covering the food within minutes of me putting it out. She was clever, though. She waited for the squirrels to dig down and uncover it, then she would scoot over to the pile of seed and grab a sunflower seed or peanut and fly up to the railing and eat it.

Tips and Tricks

  • On the worst of winter days, you will be rewarded with some great feeder bird sightings if you keep your feeders full and provide a source of clean, unfrozen water.
