When did you take this photo?
Spring 2012
Where did you take this photo?
Royal Oak, Michigan: In my back yard which shares a fence line with a public park system.
How do you attract northern cardinals to your backyard?
Tree nuts, peanuts, safflower in the feeders. Two separate watering stations (one under a low hanging cedar). Having the feeder near thick shrubs or bushes for cover allows the mating pair to stage and eat in comfort.
Tips and Tricks
- Shy birds, so telephoto lens will work best.
Melissa Mayntz, Birding / Wild Birds Guide, says:
Spring is a wonderful time to capture beautiful photographs of birds and blossoms, and even birds like the northern cardinal that stay in the same range year-round can be gorgeous to see in spring. A varied feeding station will bring them in for close views, and yes, a telephoto lens is the best tool to bring them even closer without stress.
