When did you take this photo?

September 16, 2011

What hummingbird species is this?

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Where did you take this photo?

Just north of Houston, Texas. Backyard habitat, with nearby woods and fields.

How I Did It:

We've had more hummingbirds this year than ever before. There have been 7-10 in the garden at any one time. I have several feeders out and they were swarming around them. I stood about six feet from the feeder and starting taking photos! This is the first time I have ever seen more than one on the same feeder.

Advice

  • Keep the sun behind you, otherwise you lose the wonderful detail of their feathers.
  • Other than that, I have no advice - I got this more by luck than skill!

Melissa Mayntz, About.com Birding/Wild Birds, says:

There is always a fair bit of luck involved with photographing hummingbirds, but a prepared birder can be a prepared photographer. By understanding the birds' habits, you're in a great position to take great photos.
