Today is African Penguin Awareness Day, an annual event sponsored by SANCCOB, a South African organization dedicated to the preservation of seabirds. Today's goal is to raise money and awareness to help save these endangered penguins.
African penguins are native to South Africa but are exceptionally vulnerable to oil spills. They are the only breeding penguin in Africa, and their beach colonies are popular spots for tourists to visit or for birders to see wild penguins.
