This week's featured bird is a favorite autumn species because of its spectacular migration habits - the sandhill crane gathers in tremendous flocks of thousands of birds on its wintering grounds, and seeing those flocks can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many birders. These are also one of the tallest birds in North America and their loud calls can carry for miles, making flocks even more prominent at this time of year.

My late husband and I used to go to Crex Meadows in WI to view the Sandhill Cranes staging for migration in October. Cranes were one of our favorite birds, and the gathering of so many all in one place was breathtaking to behold!
