Many cities promote reading with city-wide programs that focus on a single book, and Galveston's latest book choice will give birding a big boost. According to Galveston Reads, the city's 2013 book selection is The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession by Mark Obmascik. The book tells the engaging story of the 1998 big year competition between three of North America's premier birders, along with all the trials and tribulations they faced while adding to their lists.
