Every birder takes steps to choose the best birdseed for their feeders, but how do you know seed is high quality? A good name may not be enough. Scott's Miracle-Gro is highly respected for lawn care products and while their fertilizers and weed control products do make lush lawns, those products are not as perfect for birds. According to The Columbus Dispatch, the company has been fined $4.5 million for birdseed recalls in 2008 - recalls made because the seed was coated with chemicals fatal to birds. The seed was treated with insecticide to increase its shelf life and protect it from insects during storage. How can birders avoid purchasing potentially hazardous seed? The best way is to grow your own seed, and some of birds' favorite foods - black oil sunflower seed and millet - are easy to grow.
