Bird Species:
When Taken:
This was taken in June of 2009.
Where Taken:
We were planting roses in my sister's backyard in Springfield, Missouri. We stopped for a break and the birds took advantage of the freshly turned soil to find grubs and worms for their babies. I have frequently seen the bluebirds (and robins as well) watching us in her garden waiting for their chance. When I see a grub or worm, I'll place it on a fencepost and they quickly grab them. I'm happy to have them as they help keep the Japanese Beetle population down.
Advice
- I take my camera everywhere I go. Birds are all around us and you never know when an "photo op" might occur.
Melissa Mayntz, Birding / Wild Birds Guide, says:
Eastern bluebirds are one of the most sought after backyard birds for just that reason - they eat so many insects, they're a real help to gardeners without needing pesticides or other unnatural control methods. Other great birds to attract to help control insects in the garden include warblers, hummingbirds and flycatchers.
