How do you attract northern cardinals to your backyard?
I have fifteen feeders in the yard but they seem to like one large pagoda type with commercial cardinal feed. Of course I have three water areas and several shrubs and trees for cover. I have tried to keep cats away but do have a hawk show on occassion.
Tips and Tricks
- Just have food, water, and cover around with different type feeders and different seed mixes to try for the widest range of birds possible.
Melissa Mayntz, Birding / Wild Birds Guide, says:
Cardinals can be charming and curious, and this photo captures both those characteristics. The commercial cardinal feed is often a blend available at specialty wild bird stores or garden centers and should contain a good amount of black oil sunflower seed as well as some safflower seed, fruit and nuts, all of which will tempt hungry cardinals.
