Such a Beautiful Creation

When did you take this photo?

January 2011

Where did you take this photo?

Taken in New York from my kitchen window.

How do you attract northern cardinals to your backyard?

I recently made a bird food blend of raisins, blueberries, sunflower seeds, wild birdseed, Chopped up peanuts and walnuts. The cardinals I find are more attracted to the sunflower seeds.

I've noticed the cardinal seems to be a ground feeder, I have not yet seen the bird up into the bird feeder itself.

Tips and Tricks

  • I would suggest tossing a nice amount of sunflower seeds on the ground and or snow and shortly after the cardinal will find its way to your yard.

Melissa Mayntz, About.com Birding/Wild Birds, says:

Black oil sunflower seeds are indeed one of the northern cardinal's favorite foods. In the backyard, straight sunflower seeds or a good quality mixed seed are excellent choices to feed cardinals, and they will also enjoy safflower seeds.
