How do you attract northern cardinals to your backyard?
I recently made a bird food blend of raisins, blueberries, sunflower seeds, wild birdseed, Chopped up peanuts and walnuts. The cardinals I find are more attracted to the sunflower seeds.
I've noticed the cardinal seems to be a ground feeder, I have not yet seen the bird up into the bird feeder itself.
Tips and Tricks
- I would suggest tossing a nice amount of sunflower seeds on the ground and or snow and shortly after the cardinal will find its way to your yard.
Melissa Mayntz, About.com Birding/Wild Birds, says:
Black oil sunflower seeds are indeed one of the northern cardinal's favorite foods. In the backyard, straight sunflower seeds or a good quality mixed seed are excellent choices to feed cardinals, and they will also enjoy safflower seeds.
