Subterminal

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

(adjective) Describes a field marking on a bird’s plumage that is next to last or just before the end of a physical feature, such as a bird’s bill, wings or tail. Subterminal bands and spots are the most common types of these markings and can be diagnostic for proper bird identification in many species. In some cases a subterminal marking can be difficult to see, particularly if the bird is juvenile, molting or if the terminal marking wears off with age, such as seasonal plumage, which would make the subterminal marking less distinct.
