Mallard Family

Precocial birds, such as mallards, are born with some independence.

Ingrid Taylar
Definition:

(adjective) Describes birds that hatch covered with protective down and with their eyes open. These birds are able to leave the nest quickly, usually within a few hours or days, and they have a high degree of independence. They are able to move around and forage for food, though usually under their parents’ guidance. They usually remain with their parents to learn where to find food and for protection, including warmth at night.

Precocial birds include many shorebirds and waterfowl, such as killdeer, California quail and mallards.
