(noun) A type of aquatic bird distinguished by a pointed bill, large feet with lobed toes, a small tail and fluffy plumage on the flanks and under the tail. Grebes are exceptional diving birds that feed primarily on fish and aquatic animals, and they are related to loons. Depending on the species, grebes can be found in both freshwater and saltwater habitats, and some species may visit both habitats during different seasons.
Species of grebe include the Western, Clark’s, pied-billed, horned, eared, white-tufted and great-crested grebes.
