Mission: Migration
From Audubon New York, this educational game about migration has four different versions: players can choose to be an American robin, common yellowthroat, red-tailed hawk or great egret, and each bird has different abilities that affect the game's play. Players must guide their flock through the perils of migration from rural habitats to cities, not only controlling flight but also monitoring energy levels and choosing safe places for the birds to land. Benefits and obstacles are present throughout the game, and liberal hints are sprinkled in not only for playing the game, but for helping real migrating birds. At the end of the game, players can print a list of tips for how to help migrating birds.
Name the North American Birds
This visual quiz from Sporcle features 25 popular North American bird species, and players must type in each bird's name within the six minute time limit. The birds range from songbirds to waterfowl to raptors to wading birds, and while the exact full name of each bird does not need to be entered to count, proper spelling is essential. This quiz has been taken more than 62,000 times and only two percent of players get all 25 birds correct - put your bird identification skills to the test! If this quiz is too easy, you can also search "birds" on Sporcle for a range of other bird-related quizzes, including naming all the state birds as well as bird word scrambles and missing word puzzles.
Bird Jigsaw Puzzles
For a relaxing, easy going game, nothing beats a jigsaw puzzle. JigZone has more than 30 puzzles featuring birds from around the world, including beautiful and fun birds such as the wood duck, bee-eaters, pelicans, tufted puffins, emus and peacocks. With each puzzle, players can change the type of piece cut and the number of pieces, from 6-247 pieces with each game. The game does keep track of your time to complete the puzzle but you have as much time as you wish, and an autocomplete feature can help you finish if you get stuck.
Icy Escort
If penguins make you smile, this game from Donut Games is for you. Icy Escort is the journey of a mother penguin rescuing her chicks from 10 different levels of game play. The mechanism of the game is simple – click your mouse to jump over obstacles or onto higher levels in the playing field while collecting ice cream cones for points – but it quickly becomes more difficult than you may think. Each level must be completed within a limited time frame, and finishing early increases your bonus points.
Angry Birds
One of the most popular game apps, this free online version of Angry Birds has fewer levels than the full game versions but is just as much fun. Quirky hogs have stolen the birds' eggs, and the angry birds slingshot themselves at the hogs' fortifications to crush them in the rubble. Each level has only a certain number of shots, but players can replay each level until they succeed. Despite the vindictive nature of the game, it does not have extensive gore or inappropriate graphics. This version is affiliated with the Google Chrome browser, but it is not necessary to have the browser to play.
Endless Migration
This migration challenge from Armor Games is more complicated than its grayscale graphics indicate. Players control a flock of geese and swans flying over different terrain and through multiple obstacles, including storms and a variety of unexpected aircraft. There are 29 achievements to master, from reading the tutorial to losing the game in the first five seconds of play to gaining higher scores and a larger flock. Players can also choose various upgrades to enhance their flock as they accumulate achievements. Sensitive players should note that when their flock encounters a deadly obstacle, the birds' demise is marked with an audible squish and simple blood spatters.
