Guide Review - Grapevine Nesting Globes
Offering nesting material to birds in the spring is a simple way to attract them to your backyard, and this set of three grapevine nesting globes makes it easy to offer all natural cotton fibers for finches, hummingbirds and other backyard guests. Each globe consists of intricately woven grapevines of different sizes for birds to cling to, and the soft cotton fiber filling is loosely packed and easily plucked into tufts for nesting. Each globe comes with a simple loop hanger that is securely tied to one of the largest vines.
Despite their size – each globe is 6.5 inches in diameter – the globes are very lightweight, which can be problematic in areas prone to severe spring weather. The hanging loop is short enough, however, to keep the globe from swinging far. The smaller vines do break off easily, but there are plenty of vines remaining for birds to cling to and some birds may even prefer to break the smaller vines themselves as a sturdier nesting material.
Duncraft does claim that these globes are refillable, but the vines are so closely packed that refilling can be tedious. Since the globes come in a set of three and are generously sized, it may be more worthwhile to simply save additional globes for different years and break up the old one for the birds to scavenge for twigs. Alternatively, the multiple globes can be placed in different areas to serve even more birds, or they can be used as quaint spring gifts for birders.
