The Bottom Line

Simple and elegant, the Super Songbird Mirrored Bird Feeder gives backyard birders an up close view of feeding birds through its clear plastic construction and the accompanying one-way mirrored film. Though the feeder's lid can cause difficulty for frequent refilling, the intimate design is ideal for birders who lack good views or extensive space for feeders.

Guide Review - Super Songbird Mirrored Bird Feeder

The Super Songbird Mirrored Bird Feeder has a sleek design with clear plastic construction that offers unobstructed views of feeding birds as much as possible. The large suction cups are exceptionally sturdy and hold the feeder firmly against a window, and the narrow profile keeps the feeder protected under an awning or eaves. The front ledge of the feeder serves as a small seed platform and the raised lip offers a perch for feeding birds to encourage them to stay at the feeder where they can be easily seen.

The lid of the feeder, however, is its weakest feature. Designed to slip over the suction cups, the unyielding plastic can be exceptionally hard to attach properly and once attached, does not open fully for easy refilling. It may also not close fully, but is slightly oversized to provide protection to the seed reservoirs even if there is a slight gap.

This feeder comes with an 8x14 inch of mirrored film that is to be attached inside the window where the feeder is positioned. The film provides a visual barrier to allow birds to come close to the window without noticing observers inside, and it can be reused and repositioned if the feeder needs to be moved. The overall opacity of the film varies depending on its positioning and light levels.

Both the feeder and the mirrored film come with easy-to-follow, detailed instructions for effective and long-lasting installation. Birders who have problems with the lid may want to try using hooks to attach the feeder or may find an alternative for the lid instead, though such modifications are not recommended by Duncraft and improper use of the feeder could cause damage. Installing the feeder under a ledge, eaves or awning can help mitigate any gaps from the lid, and some birders may prefer not to use the lid at all.

Simple and attractive, the Super Songbird Mirrored Bird Feeder is an adequate design for window feeding birds, though the stiff lid can be problematic. Nevertheless, it is suitable for beginning birders, children or anyone who wants a close up, intimate view of their backyard birds.
