Eagle Species List

List of Eagle Species

The bateleur is one of the more colorful eagle species.

Rene Mayorga

Eagles are powerful predators, important cultural and societal symbols and some of the most sought-after raptors for birders to add to their life lists. Depending on how different species are classified there are more than 60 eagle species in the world, with the majority found in Africa and Asia.

Despite the strength and intelligence of these birds, however, eagles are also exceptionally vulnerable to different risks raptors face because of their long reproductive cycles and slow population growth. More than 30 eagle species – nearly half of all species of eagles – are considered vulnerable, threatened or endangered, but knowing which species need extra protection is the first step toward protecting all of these noble raptors.
