Cleanup efforts from Hurricane Sandy will take years to complete, but one deadline is much sooner. According to Fox News, debris on New York's Fire Island includes washed up appliances, rotting wood and other items, and the mid-March arrival of piping plovers will impede cleanup efforts due to restrictions on beach vehicle traffic during the nesting season. If the birds arrive before the trash is removed, cleanup efforts will need to continue with barges.
While your backyard habitat may not have been ravaged by a hurricane, there are always spring cleaning chores that can be done to make it ready for returning birds. Spring cleaning for your bird feeders is a must, and cleaning bird houses can make them ready for new families. What other spring chores do you undertake to prepare for the birds?
