This week's featured bird often eludes birders with its dull, camouflaged plumage, but its high-pitched calls and distinctive tail pumps are easy ways to identify the American pipit. This time of year is especially good for finding these birds on empty beaches and barren fields - just look for a sparrow-like bird that isn't a sparrow.
