The American Birding Association has announced its 2013 Bird of the Year - drumroll please - the common nighthawk. A fascinating species, the common nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) has many interesting habits and intrigues birders of all ages, and it is a superb choice for the ABA's goals of getting more people interested in birding and bird conservation. With a wide range, this species can be easily seen by many North American birders, yet its falling numbers encourage greater protection efforts, just the thing that can come about because of this recognition.
