Bird of the Week: Hoary Redpoll

By January 3, 2013

Follow me on:

After the rush of the holiday season and as winter deepens, January always feels like a frigid month, and this week's featured bird just loves it - the hoary redpoll is right at home in Arctic conditions, and many of these birds spend their entire lives in the Arctic. Birders in more southern areas can get lucky, however, with winter irruptions that bring these frosty finches right to the feeders.

The bird pictured looks like a Common Redpoll to me. The heavy flank streaking belies a Hoary and the bill looks too large…

There is a significant amount of overlap between markings on the two species, but the amount of white on the chest and abdomen do clue this in as a hoary redpoll rather than a common, which would show more streaking beyond the flanks. As for the bill size, that depends on angle a lot and can be hard to tell between the two birds even at close range, and this is a more distant photo.
