Many people celebrate the holidays with large family gatherings, so we're exploring the 12 Days of Christmas as it relates to bird families far and wide.
On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... Seven swans a-swimming.
Swans may be graceful swimmers, but they're far from the best swimmers in the avian world - that honor belongs to birds in the Spheniscidae family, the penguins. Though there are only 18 species of penguins in the world, they are true aquatic masters that spend most of their adult lives in the sea. They've even evolved flippers rather than wings, and have other adaptations that make them more at home in the water than nearly any other bird.
