The Christmas Bird Count season is about to begin, and for the first time since the count began in 1900, there are no mandatory fees for participants. According to the official website, to offset the loss of the fee collection, the analysis of the full count will no longer be printed, but will be available online after the CBC is completed.
The first count date is December 14 so there is plenty of time to sign up. Organizing groups may still have fees for associated events such as raffles or meals, but those fees are typically optional. The Christmas Bird Count season runs through January 6, so brush up on how to count birds, sign up for a local count and make birding a merry, and free, holiday tradition!
