A Kansas man who illegally shot an eagle in January 2012 has been sentenced. According to KAKE, Chad Irvin must serve 50 hours of community service, pay $8,000 in fines and undergo a year of supervised probation during which he will not be permitted to hunt or engage in similar activities.
Irvin shot the golden eagle, which is protected under the Migratory Bird Act, while he was coyote hunting. The bird's legs were paralyzed, and it had to be euthanized.
I'm glad to see such a harsh penalty levied for this crime, but I do hope that Irvin's community service includes time at nature preserves or working with bird rehabilitation. Do you agree with his sentence? Share your thoughts in the comments!
