Although I’ve done wildlife rehab for over 21 years, I’m always amazed when I see an animal take off into the wild again. The other day I was out walking the neighborhood, was headed back home when I found a Vaux Swift laying on the sidewalk just a couple houses away from my home. I gently picked him up, took him home to my rehab room. After a thorough exam (no palpable fractures) I gave him a bit of fluid and let him hang out on the curtains (swifts don’t perch, they cling). After a couple of hours, I did a test flight in the room and he was fluttering around pretty well. Time to try the great outdoors.
When I took him out, let him sit in my hand, he fluttered off into the sky to immediately be joined by 3 other swifts in the family. What a joy to watch all 4 swoop through the air chittering happily.
