It would be a great thing to spot this week's featured bird in North America, but the great spotted woodpecker is one of the rarest accidental birds to be recorded on the continent. In Europe and Asia, however, this beautiful woodpecker is the most widespread of the woodpeckers and can be found in nearly any appropriate forest, park or garden.
