The stranded emperor penguin recently found on Peka Peka Beach in New Zealand and moved to a local zoo for its health and safety is now recovering from endoscopic surgery. According to Boston.com, the bird underwent the delicate surgery on June 27 from a local specialist in the procedure - for humans - to remove sand and twigs from its stomach, materials it is believed the bird consumed mistaking them for snow. In their native Antarctica range, emperor penguins consume snow for moisture. The bird is now recovering at the Wellington Zoo and while its full recovery could take months, and it is hoped that the remaining sand in the bird's digestive system will be passed naturally. It is yet uncertain whether the penguin will be able to be returned to the wild.
