In a recent story from Staines News, bird lover Russell Butt describes his mission to see the rare brown shrike that has been seen on Staines Moor - only the seventh brown shrike ever recorded in the United Kingdom. Butt admits that he's never been a twitcher, the type of birder who willingly travels great distances in order to add one more rare bird to the life list, but he found the bird's appeal and the enthusiasm of the gathered crowds intriguing. While Butt only traveled a few miles to see the bird, other birders he met had driven overnight, skipped work and rearranged their schedules to see the shrike. How far would you go to see a rare bird? Many birders regularly travel to festivals or on birding tours to add to their life lists, but would you take extreme measures if a rare bird appeared? Would you cancel plans, skip a party, call in sick to work or fabricate some excuse just to have a chance to add one more bird to your life list? Share your twitching tales in the comments!
