The famous Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya is the first African national park to be recognized as an Important Bird Area, according to Wanderlust. The BirdLife International program seeks to identify and promote conservation of areas that are critical for bird survival and diversity, and Lake Nakuru is internationally known for its amazing concentration of lesser flamingos, a species that is being watch carefully and may be subject to survival threats. In addition to the famous flamingos, Lake Nakuru is an important habitat for more than 450 species of birds, including multiple endangered birds such as the martial eagle and the Madagascar pond-heron.
It is hoped that designating Lake Nakuru as an Important Bird Area will help promote conservation of the lake's delicate habitat and raise awareness of bird conservation issues. Currently, the lake is threatened by ongoing drought and local deforestation.
