This week's featured bird is the
hairy woodpecker: a black and white woodpecker that is one of the most widely distributed in North America, including all through Canada, the United States and central Mexico. Even though the bird's range may be large, however, it is still a shy species that prefers mature forests more isolated from human habitation.
Despite their cautious nature, however, hairy woodpeckers are fascinating birds to watch. They have a powerful call and rapid drumming, and their upright posture and bold plumage is always attractive.
