Normally found exclusively in North America, a sandhill crane has caused quite a stir in South Ronaldsay in Orkney, Scotland. According to STV, sandhill cranes have only been confirmed in the United Kingdom three times, most recently in 1991. Hundreds of birders are traveling from across the United Kingdom to add the bird to their life lists, and it is hoped that the bird’s appearance will provide an economic boost to Orkney. It is likely that the crane drift migrated on winds from recent hurricanes, which helped it make the trip across the Atlantic Ocean. While it’s always unique when a rare bird arrives well outside its range, birders have a much better chance of seeing unusual species if they plan a birding tour that focuses on international destinations.
