Swarming Swifts

September is time for the Swift Watch in Portland, Oregon, a time when up to 25,000 vaux’s swifts per night flock to the chimney of Chapman Elementary School to roost during their annual migration. According to OregonLive.com, however, even though the birds are delightful, the birders who swarm to the area to see this awesome sight can be a nuisance. Double parking and littering are just two of the poor behaviors visitors have demonstrated.

The Portland Audubon Society is attempting to help manage this year’s Swift Watch by arranging a greater police presence and giving residents near the school orange cones to keep their driveways clear. Birders, however, should be sure to practice good birding group etiquette when visiting any event. Follow all local laws, respect residents and enjoy the birds peacefully to add this amazing bird to your life list in a spectacular way.
