Connecticut Makes Beaches
Bird-Friendly
Saturday July 4, 2009
New regulations from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection are designed to protect nesting shorebirds along the state’s beaches, according to a story from The Advocate. Sensitive and endangered nesting species in the area include plovers, terns, egrets and herons, and a range of protective measures are now in place to protect the birds’ nests and fledglings.Restrictions include fencing off nesting areas with warning signs and prohibiting fishing near nesting areas. The DEP is also offering advice for beachgoers such as refraining from flying kites that may be perceived as predators near bird colonies, keeping pets from roaming freely on the beaches and avoiding leaving or burying picnic trash on the beach where it may attract predators.
