Birding Volunteers Needed
for Fourth of July
Thursday July 2, 2009
Birders can have a fabulous Fourth in Indian Shores, Florida by volunteering at the Seacoast Seabird Sanctuary to help protect black skimmer chicks when they are exposed by fleeing frightened parents during fireworks displays. According to MyFoxTampaBay.com, volunteers will form a human chain around the beach nesting area to gently encourage the chicks to stay within safe boundaries.Founded in 1971, the Seacoast Seabird Sanctuary is the largest wild bird hospital and bird sanctuary in the United States, caring for up to 10,000 injured birds annually. The black skimmer colony in Indian Shores is the only nesting black skimmer colony on a public beach, and the sanctuary provides the birds a peaceful place to rear their young.
