Sparrow Sightings

Monday March 30, 2009
Sparrows often are disdained by backyard birders, but these “little brown jobs” are fascinating, energetic and entertaining. In a recent article in the Winston-Salem Journal, Ron Morris, vice president of the Audubon Society of Forsyth County, discusses the several varieties of sparrows to be found in North Carolina and offers identification tips.

Identifying different species of sparrows can be challenging, but both novice and experienced birders are often surprised to discover how many sparrow species live nearby. While the house sparrow is one of the most common backyard birds in North America, other species such as the song sparrow, chipping sparrow, savannah sparrow and white-crowned sparrow are similarly widespread.

What sparrows visit your region? Submit your sparrow photos to share, or email me for identification help!
