Bird of the Week: American Goldfinch

Tuesday March 24, 2009
Birders often feel like they’ve had a major gold strike when this week’s featured bird arrives in their backyard: the American goldfinch. One of the most familiar backyard birds of North America, this perky yellow finch is also one of the most popular among birders because of its beautiful song and striking plumage. At the same time, however, these birds have a voracious appetite for nyger seed, but savvy birders can plant seed-bearing flowers as a natural food source.

We had goldfinches at our feeder (in Northwest Georgia, USA) last year – I haven’t seen any yet this year. They are so beautiful. I love watching the birds, especially the goldfinches and the nuthatches.

We also have lots of bluebirds – both our houses have bluebird families inhabiting them this year. We saw one that was HUGE earlier this week.
