Bird of the Week: American Robin

Tuesday March 17, 2009
Spring is nearly here, and in honor of the warming temperatures and longer days this week’s featured bird is the American robin. Contrary to old birding wives’ tales, however, the robin is not the first bird of spring – in most of the United States, robins do not migrate. Robins are also highly territorial, and their keen eyesight makes them very adept at finding worms and insects.

Sure do. Oddly enough, we have a pair that nests in the kids’ tree house. Birds and kids get along just fine.

I have one in a most disturbing place. It decided to build its nest on the frame of my boat trailer right underneath my boat. Looks like I won’t be going fishing anytime soon. On the upside it makes for great photo opportunities. My main concern is the easy access for predators.

I have been watching a mama robin in my yard for the past few weeks. There are 3 babies in her nest and they are almost ready to fly away. They are getting too big for the nest! I really hope they make it past my dog!
