This week’s featured bird is the most familiar goose in all of North America: the Canada goose. What is most astonishing about this bird, however, is its great variety – sizes can range from the size of a mallard to birds more than twice as large.I grew up with Canada geese; they were popular residents at several ponds and waterways in my youth. It was always a pleasure to offer them bread scraps and see them eagerly approach for a bite, and many times I’ve fed these geese from my hands. Today they are still beautiful, distinctive water fowl that are wonderfully approachable for many birders, so long as you don’t get on their bad side.

Hello;
I never realized that they had different sizes like that. I go check them out from time to time at the animal refugee. Thanks alot.
Interesting article, Melissa. We have sometimes 40+ geese in field behind my back yard. They have wandered into my yard and I try to keep them from coming up too far because they leave such a mess. As you say, they are interesting to watch however. I live across from a river so the geese often will flyover or waddle over between yards to the river and the first thing my son and I noticed is a “sentry” will stand watch at the top of the path that goes down to the water, until the rest of its group are in the water.
