Bird of the Week: Common Raven

Monday January 5, 2009
January is a time to be resourceful by saving money, making goals and practicing self improvement. There is no more resourceful bird than this week’s Bird of the Week, the common raven. These scavengers – believed to be among the most intelligent songbirds – are adept hunters, agile fliers and vocal visitors throughout much of the country.

re: The piece on birding ethics. Great information. I don’t see a place to comment on that particular article, and I couldn’t get the e-mail link to work, so I’m posting here. I wonder if you might consider adding information on contacting a wildlife hospital or a wildlife expert when encountering an injured bird. You mention putting the bird somewhere to recover naturally. Unfortunately, sometimes “natural” recovery is simply not enough and the injured animal may suffer as a result. There are many trained individuals around the country — and a wildlife hospital or rehabilitation expert can advise people on the best thing to do, given a wide variety of circumstances. Almost every area in the country has a list of wildlife rehabbers. Both NWRA or IWRC have information on finding such a person or facility.
