Leftover Birdfeeder Feast

Friday November 28, 2008
The feast may be over for us (despite that last slice of pie in the fridge), but let the birds give thanks for delicious leftovers. Toss your leftover dinner rolls and pumpkin pie crusts out to your backyard birds for a holiday treat. Offer extra cranberry sauce for orioles, tanagers and other fruit-loving birds, and be sure to refill feeders for birds that prefer a more traditional feast.

Did you have a more unusual Thanksgiving dinner? Birds also enjoy a range of kitchen scraps, including stale cheese, bacon rinds, cooked spaghetti, cooked rice and all sorts of breads. What unique foods do your backyard birds feast on? Share your most unusual bird foods in the comments!

(1) Figgis says:

I was under the impression that certain foods, especially salty foods like bacon, are detrimental to birds because of the birds’ inability to process salt. Maybe in the context of this topic, you could post about the ingredients people absolutely must avoid for the birds’ health. For instance, I still see many people feeding ducks bread, even though this is really not the best idea given the potential problems.

Excellent idea, Figgis, and I do plan on doing a piece on the worst foods for birds so backyard birders can avoid wasted and poor quality seeds and other foods. Healthier birds are happier birds, and that’s what we all want to see.
